Frequently Asked Questions
Answers about custom mechanical keyboards, OEM/ODM and global delivery.
Seventeen years of in-house keyboard manufacturing condensed into one page — clear answers about MOQ, lead time, tooling, IP, quality and shipping. If something is not listed below, our team replies within one business day.

Getting Started
What is the minimum order quantity (MOQ) for a custom mechanical keyboard?
Standard OEM MOQ starts at 500 units per SKU. For ODM projects using our existing tooling library, MOQ starts at 300 units. Pilot runs below the standard MOQ can be evaluated case by case for brand partners with a clear distribution plan.
How long does an OEM/ODM keyboard project take from concept to delivery?
Typical lead time is 35 to 55 days for ODM programs that use our shared tooling and reference designs, and 60 to 90 days for full OEM builds that include industrial design, custom tooling and validation. Mass production is scheduled once engineering samples are signed off, so the timeline depends mainly on feedback speed during the sample phase.
Do you provide samples before mass production?
Yes. We always provide engineering samples for sign-off, followed by pre-production samples (PPS) produced on the actual production line. Sampling fees are credited back against the first mass production order on most programs.
Can I bring only a rough idea and have you handle the rest?
Yes. Many of our partners come to us with a sketch, a mood board or a reference product. Our industrial design team will translate the concept into a structured brief, propose material and switch combinations, and present 2 to 3 design directions before tooling begins.

Engineering & Customization
Can jianpan handle industrial design and tooling in-house?
Yes. Industrial design, mechanical engineering, PCB layout, firmware development, mould fabrication, injection, surface finishing and final assembly are all performed in-house at our Shenzhen facility. This vertical integration is what keeps our lead times predictable.
What customization options are available on a keyboard?
You can customize the case color and material (ABS, aluminum, polycarbonate), keycap legends and colorways, switch selection (linear, tactile, silent, clicky and force curves), plate material, PCB layout (ANSI, ISO, JIS, 60%, 65%, 75%, TKL, full-size, split), firmware (QMK, VIA, proprietary), packaging and branded accessories.
Who owns the tooling, moulds and design files?
All custom tooling, moulds, PCB files and firmware are stored under the customer's ownership. Tooling is not reused across other brands and is released to the customer on request at the end of the program.
Do you support wireless and Bluetooth keyboards?
Yes. We build wired, 2.4G wireless, Bluetooth and tri-mode (USB-C + 2.4G + Bluetooth) keyboards, with firmware optimized for low-latency gaming or multi-device productivity setups.
Category 03 /
Quality & Compliance
How is product quality controlled during production?
Every unit passes a 48-point inspection including key travel force, continuity, switch bounce, surface finish and packaging integrity. AOI and ICT are applied on every PCB, and life-cycle tests (5 to 10 million keystrokes) are run on every production batch.
Which certifications do your keyboards carry?
Common certifications include CE, FCC, RoHS, REACH, UKCA, RCM, KC and BIS. We help brand partners prepare and submit documentation for the markets they sell into, and we can arrange third-party lab testing on request.
Do you protect customer intellectual property?
Yes. We sign NDAs and IP agreements on request. Tooling, mould files, PCB files and firmware remain under the customer's ownership and are not reused without written consent. Production areas for different customers are physically separated.
What is your defect rate and how are defects handled?
Our typical field defect rate is below 0.3% across the first 12 months. Defective units identified during incoming inspection are replaced or credited. A formal 8D report is provided for any systemic issue, along with a corrective action plan.

Logistics & After-Sales
Which shipping terms and regions do you support?
We support EXW, FOB Shenzhen, CIF, DDP and door-to-door logistics. Export covers 30+ countries across North America, Europe, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Oceania and Latin America. Carton, master carton and pallet packing are available.
What after-sales and warranty support is included?
Standard 12-month warranty against manufacturing defects. Spare parts, repair guides and RMA processing are available for the lifetime of the program, and we provide marketing collateral and training material for your support team.
How are payment terms structured?
Standard terms are 30% deposit on order confirmation and 70% balance before shipment. L/C at sight, T/T and Open Account terms are available for established partners. Tooling is paid in full against a milestone schedule.
Can I visit the factory or join a virtual tour?
Yes. We host on-site factory tours at our Shenzhen facility and run live virtual tours for partners who cannot travel. Both are scheduled with our team once an NDA is signed.
